Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Sept. 29, 2013) – The FIU men's soccer team used two goals from freshman
Luis Betancur and junior
Quentin Albrecht to earn a 2-0 victory over the Penn Quakers on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Panthers improve to 4-5-0 overall, heading into Sunday's Conference USA matchup with Marshall at FIU Soccer Stadium.
"This was a good win for our team today," said head coach Ken Arena. "Penn is better than their record shows. Our team is finding out what it takes to win. We need to approach each game as we did today."
Freshman
Lawrence Craggs made the start in goal and earned his first career shutout, as he made four saves. FIU out-shot Penn by a count of 19-7 for the contest. Nine of the 19 Panthers shots were on goal. Albrecht recorded a team-best five shots on the day, with two of them on net.
FIU's first score came in the 19th minute, as Betancur netted his third goal of the year. Senior
Gonzalo Frechilla crossed a ball into the center of the box and found his freshman teammate's feet. Betancur one timed it in to give FIU a 1-0 lead.
FIU then added an insurance goal in the second half, as Albrecht connected on his third goal of the year, with assists coming to freshmen
Ismael Longo and
Marvin Hezel. Hezel connected a pass to Longo at midfield, who placed a nice lob pass to Albrecht, allowing the junior to break away for the score.
The Panthers return home to face Marshall on Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. in C-USA action. FIU will then hit the road for two contests at New Mexico (Oct. 12) and UAB (Oct. 16).
