Box Score ORLANDO, Fla. (Sept. 5, 2013) – The FIU men's soccer team (1-2-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but two second half goals by UCF gave the Knights a 2-1 victory on Thursday night in Orlando. Senior
Roberto Alterio netted the first half goal for the Panthers.
The Knights outshot the Panthers by a count of 11-8 in the contest. Freshman
Lawrence Craggs made his second career start between the pipes for the Panthers, making three saves.
The Panthers attacked early and were rewarded a corner kick 1:54 into the contest. Senior
Gonzalo Frechilla took the corner and the Panthers kept it in the box, where
Nelson Milsaint found Alterio. The senior knocked it past the goalkeeper to the left side to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.
Just shortly after, FIU continued to provide a steady attack. Junior
Quentin Albrecht had two shots in a short matter of time, one going wide and the other being saved by UCF keeper Sebastian Evers.
In the second half, the Knights struck in the 70th minute off a free kick from Fernando Laverde. Laverde's free kick came from 25 yards out to tie the game at one. Just six minutes later, Romario Williams of UCF tallied his first goal of the season to give the Knights a 2-0 advantage with 14 minutes to go.
FIU next turns to its contest at Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday night at 6 p.m. The Panthers close out their five-game road trip on Sept. 13 at Florida Atlantic before taking on North Florida in its home opener on Sept. 20 at FIU Soccer Stadium.
