ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Oct. 4, 2014) – The FIU men's soccer team fell to New Mexico, 2-0, on Saturday, as the Panthers dropped their second Conference USA match this season. A goal in the first minute of the game would determine the outcome, as the Panthers drop to 3-5-1 overall and 0-2-0 in C-USA play.
The Lobos came out on fire in the first half. Not even a minute into the contest, UNM got on the board thanks to Niko Hansen's third goal of the season. Chris Gurule played a long ball to Hansen, who got through and found the far post to give the Lobos a 1-0 advantage.
The Panthers were held to no shots in the first half and had one close scoring opportunity. However, the Lobos got six shots on goal, one of them finding the back of the net and another one striking the crossbar. FIU was carded three times in the first half and had to play a man down for the entire second half.
UNM's Chris Wehan got two of the first three Lobo shots off in the second half. The first one was blocked and the second was saved by redshirt freshman keeper
David Mitchell. Moments later, sophomore
Josue Espana recorded FIU's first shot in the 61
st minute, a shot that sailed just wide of the goal.
In the 64
th minute, the Panthers had their first shot on goal as senior
Roberto Alterio shot one from the far left wing where the Lobo keeper saved it. Hansen of UNM answered on the counter attack with another Lobo shot that struck the crossbar. Mitchell made another save over a minute later on a shot by Josh Dye. Mitchell was busy in the second half, also making saves in the 75
th and 76
th minute. Â
