Box Score MIAMI (Feb. 22, 2014) – The FIU Baseball team improved to 7-0 with a 10-0 victory over the Stony Brook Seawolves on Saturday night at the FIU Baseball Stadium. The Panthers are off to 7-0 start for the seventh time in program history.
Junior pitcher Mike Ellis improved to 2-0 with a 5 1/3 inning start, striking out seven batters while allowing just three hits. FIU's bullpen continued to be dominant, allowing just two hits and a total of four base runners along with six strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
Sophomore second baseman
Edwin Rios had a breakout game, going 4-for-5 with three RBI. Junior catcher
Aramis Garcia garnered two hits and scored two runs. Sophomore
Antonio Rodriguez had a pinch-hit, bases-clearing double in the seventh inning. Junior
Josh Anderson also doubled and drove in two-runs.
FIU has scored in the first inning in all seven games this season, as the Panthers plated three on four hits in the first inning. Junior
Julius Gaines and Garcia each singled in the inning, which led to an Anderson RBI groundout, scoring Gaines. Rios followed with a single through the right side to score Garcia. Junior
L.K. Thompson capped it off with an RBI single up the middle to plate Rios.
Garcia led off the third inning with a base-hit and then stole second base for his second steal of the season. Rios tallied his second RBI of the contest by driving in Garcia later in the inning.
FIU's big inning came in the seventh. The first two batters in senior
Tyler Hibbert and Gaines reached base safely. Then with one out, a failed pickoff attempt by Stony Brook allowed Hibbert to score from second and Gaines to advance to third. Anderson ripped his third double of the season down the left field line to score Gaines and give the Panthers a 6-0 lead. Rios followed that with his third run driven in of the night, a single to score Anderson from second. FIU loaded the bases with a pinch-hitting opportunity for Rodriguez. The sophomore collected his first extra-base hit with a scorching double down the right field line to clear the bases, giving FIU a 10-0 advantage.
The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. to close out the series with the Seawolves. Freshman
Cody Crouse will start for the Panthers.
