ATLANTA (Mar. 10, 2014) – The No. 9-ranked sand volleyball team put forth a dominating performance on Monday evening, defeating UAB, 5-0, in day one of Georgia State's Sand Volleyball Tournament. With the victory, FIU improves to 5-1 in dual matches on the year.
Playing at the No. 1 spot, the tandem of Ksenia Sukhereva and Maja Rosko played extremely hard as they defeated Kiri Hirini and Bethanie Thomas in a close three-setter, 21-17, 18-21 and 15-9. It was the only three-set game played in the match.
In the No. 4 spot, the dynamic duo of Jessica Mendoza and Jessica Gehrke only gave up a total of 16 points in their 21-6 and 21-10 wins over Lindsay Simmons and Becca Howard. The squad is now 6-0 in dual action on the season.
Also picking up hard-fought victories for the Panthers was the No. 2 team Tina Toghiyani and Aren Cupp, who registered a 22-20 and 21-14 win over Sara Rischell and Rachael Fairbanks, while the No. 3 squad of Kristine Monforte and Martyna Gluchowicz picked up a 21-8 and 23-21 win.
Rounding out the day was Maryna Samoday and Camila Rosado who played at the No. 5 seed, downing Ally Slaughter and Amber Treace, 21-12 and 21-11.
In exhibition action, Savannah Davisand and Marina Boulanger teamed up for a hard-fought 21-16 and 21-15 victory over UAB's Emma Schroerand and Mandy Glon.
