No. 30 @FIUBaseball Clinches Series with 9-0 Win over Marshall

Box Score MIAMI (March 22, 2013) – The FIU baseball team (19-4, 5-3 Conference USA) picked up its third-straight win on Saturday evening, earning a 9-0 victory over Marshall. The Panthers had a three-run sixth inning and a six-run seventh in the victory. Panther pitchers allowed just four hits.
 
Freshman Cody Crouse improved to 2-0 in his career, allowing just four hits in seven innings of work. Crouse allowed six total base runners while striking out four. He lowers his season ERA to 1.55. Junior Mike Ellis and freshman Williams Durruthy picked up the remaining two scoreless innings.
 
Sophomore Edwin Rios had the big day for the Panthers, going 2-for-5 with a home run, double and four RBI. Junior Aramis Garcia collected three hits to improve his season batting average to .420. Freshman Brandon Gomez and senior Tyler Hibbert extended their hitting streaks to 13 and 12 games, respectively.
 
The Panthers kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Julius Gaines and Garcia reached on singles to give FIU a first and third situation with nobody out. The first run of the game was scored on a fielder's choice groundout by junior Josh Anderson. Rios followed that with a two-run homer to right field to up FIU's lead to 3-0.
 
Junior Brian Portelli was called upon to pinch-hit in the seventh inning and delivered with a double down the left field line. Following a walk to junior Roche Woodard, Hibbert singled to right to score the pinch-runner, junior Alec Beyersdorf. Gaines drove in the second run of the inning on an RBI groundout to increase the Panther advantage to 5-0. Garcia singled and Anderson singled to drive in Gaines to give FIU a 6-0 lead. The barrage continued, as Rios ripped a two-run double to left center. FIU added one more run on an error to cap off its fourth six-run inning this season.
 
FIU closes out its three-game set with the Herd at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Freshman Chris Mourelle will start for the Panthers on the mound.
