MIAMI (March 25, 2014) – The seventh-ranked FIU Sand Volleyball team kicked off its 2014 home campaign Tuesday, as the Panthers swept Florida Atlantic, 5-0, while downing Florida Gulf Coast and Webber by scores of 4-1. With the three victories, FIU improves to 9-2 in dual matches this season.
"I'm really proud of my team," said head coach Rita Buck-Crockett. "Everyone did really well, and that also includes the girls who did not play. Today was a really successful day for FIU Sand. We are working hard to stay on track to try and get that bid to Nationals. The team is just getting better and better every day."
Today's No. 2 duo of Maryna Samoday and Marina Boulanger picked up three victories on the day as they swept all their competition. This was Boulanger's fist action of the season, minus exhibition play.
Also picking up sweeping wins on the day were the No. 3 tandem of Tina Toghiyani and Aren Cupp as well as the No. 4 team of Ksenia Suckhareva and Camilla Rosado. The Toghiyani/Cupp duo improves to 9-3 on the year, while the first-time team of Suckhareva and Rosado make their debut at 3-0.
The No. 5 squad of also went 3-0 on the day, sweeping all but one match. Senior Kristine Monforte and junior Marita Gluchowicz swept Florida Gulf Coast, 21-14 and 21-13, and Webber, 21-10 and 21-12. Florida Atlantic's Kristi Tekavec and Lexi Rhein pushed the Panthers to three in the first matchup of the day, FIU prevailed, 15-21, 21-14 and 15-8.
FIU's top duo of the day, Jessica Gehrke and Giovanna Pasos, went 1-2 as they defeated Florida Atlantic in two, but fell to Florida Gulf Coast in close three-setter and Webber in two.
FIU will take a week off before returning to action on Saturday, April 4. The Panthers will hit South Beach for the FIU Surf and Turf Tournament, taking on Florida Atlantic, LSU and North Flo+rida. First serve is set for 10:30 a.m.
