Box Score MONROE, La. (April 9, 2014) – The FIU baseball team (24-9, 8-7) dropped its first midweek contest of the 2014 season in an 12-6 loss to the ULM Warhawks on Wednesday evening.
Junior
Aramis Garcia led the way for the Panthers, as he tallied two hits and drove in three runs. Freshman
Brandon Gomez also tallied a multi-hit game in the loss.
The Warhawks got to junior pitcher
Robby Kalaf in the first inning with a three-spot. After getting the lead-off hitter out, the next two batters reached on hit-by-pitch and a single. A sacrifice fly scored the first ULM runner, followed by a two-run single from Dalton Herrington, to extend the lead to 3-0.
FIU answered back with two runs in the third, thanks to the bat of Garcia. Freshman J.C. Escarra was the starting catcher on Wednesday night and led off the third inning with a base-hit. Senior
Tyler Hibbert walked and then junior
Julius Gaines grounded into a fielder's choice to give FIU a first and third situation with one out. Garcia laced a double down the left field line to score Escarra and Gaines to trim the Warhawk lead to 3-2. However, the Warhawks would come back with three more in the bottom of the third.
The Panthers tallied a three-run, four-hit fifth inning. The first five Panthers reached base as Hibbert singled, Gaines walked, Garcia hit an RBI single, junior
Josh Anderson hit an RBI single and sophomore
Edwin Rios roped an RBI double. That resulted in three runs for FIU with nobody out. However, the six through eight batters got out and stranded runners on second and third. From there, the Warhawks tacked on a run in the bottom half to make it 7-5.
FIU manufactured a run in the seventh inning. Garcia reached second on a throwing error and then advanced to third on Anderson's groundout. Rios drove Garcia in on a groundout to second to cut the Warhawk lead to 7-6.
ULM would put the game out of reach with a five-run bottom of the eighth.
