JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – FIU's baseball program fell 4-2 to Jacksonville State in the series opener Friday evening at Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium in Conference USA (CUSA) play.
FIU (13-24, 5-11 CUSA) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning but surrendered three runs in the seventh as the Gamecocks rallied for the win.
The Panthers struck quickly to open the game.
Cooper Rasmussen led off with a double, extending his on-base streak to 22 games, and advanced to third on an error by the right fielder.
Andrew Ildefonso then reached on an error by the starting pitcher, allowing Rasmussen to score.
Mario Trivella followed with a bunt RBI groundout that plated Ildefonso, giving FIU a 2-0 advantage.
Jacksonville State got on the board in the fourth inning, loading the bases before a passed ball cut the deficit to 2-1. The Gamecocks took control in the seventh, using a balk and a pair of RBI groundouts to move ahead 4-2.
On the mound,
Preston Prince turned in another strong outing, tossing six innings without allowing an earned run while striking out four. The left-hander has now logged 13.1 innings over his last two starts.
Tyrus Riley was charged with the loss, allowing three earned runs in 0.1 innings, while
Jordan Vargas added 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Offensively, FIU recorded four hits, with Rasmussen,
Cole Cleveland,
Samuel Fischer,
Marc Hersh each contributing base hits on the night.
