JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 16, 2014) – The FIU men's soccer team (1-3-1) dropped a tough match to the East Tennessee State Buccaneers on Tuesday evening. Despite scoring the first goal, FIU surrendered two unanswered goals to ETSU, ending in a 2-1 result.
Senior strikerÂ
Quentin Albrecht scored his first goal of the 2014 season early in the contest off an assist from juniorÂ
Daniel Gonzalez. FIU outshot the Buccaneers, 10-7, and had four more corners than ETSU, 6-2. The Panthers were aggressive all night, committing 13 fouls while the opposition committed just four.
FIU brought the pressure immediately, as the Panthers earned a corner kick less than a minute into the contest. Off the corner kick, sophomoreÂ
Ismael Longo got off a shot off a corner kick from sophomoreÂ
Josue España that was blocked. But minutes later, Albrecht got loose and scored on a breakaway in the fourth minute to put FIU on the board.
The Panthers controlled possession after the goal. However, a handball in FIU's defensive third of the field right in front of the box gave the Buccaneers an opportunity. The free kick by Joao Ramalho found the back of the net in the 22
ndminute and knotted the match up at one.
The go-ahead goal came in the 83
rd minute, as Cory Saeurwine was responsible for the deciding score. On a cross from the corner by Joao Ramalho, Saerwine made a run towards the far post, got a foot on the ball and scored to put the Buccaneers up for good.
Redshirt freshmanÂ
David Mitchell recorded three saves in the loss.
FIU returns home on Friday at 7:30 p.m., hosting San Diego State.
