MIAMI (April 5, 2015) – The FIU baseball team (14-18, 6-6 C-USA) dropped the series finale to the UTSA Roadrunners (18-14, 7-5 C-USA), 4-2 Sunday afternoon at the FIU Baseball Stadium.
Four Panthers recorded multiple hits as freshman
Jack Schaaf, senior
Brian Portelli, junior
Edwin Rios and senior
Josh Anderson each went 2-for-5 in the game with Schaaf and Anderson driving in a run apiece.
In all, FIU had 11 hits by seven different batters. However, the Panthers plated just two runs, while stranding 13 on base.
Sophomore
Chris Mourelle (5-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs, while scattering seven hits over seven and one-third innings of action.
The Roadrunners scored four runs on eight hits to claim the series victory (two games to one).
Nolan Trabanino (1-4) was credited with the win, giving up one run on seven hits in five and two-thirds innings of action. For UTSA, Jesse Baker went 2-for-3, including a home run with an RBI and a run scored. Logan Kinder (1-for-4) had a big two-run single for the Roadrunners in the fifth.
The Panthers took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Anderson drove in Portelli with an RBI single. The Roadrunners tied the game in the top of the fourth with a solo shot by Baker. UTSA added two more runs in the top of the fifth (Kinder two-run single) and plated one more in the top of the ninth with a home run by C.J. Pickering to take a 4-1 lead.
FIU scored one run in the bottom of the ninth as Schaaf doubled to right-center field, scoring
Austin Rodriguez, to make it 4-2. The Panthers loaded the bases with one out in their half of the ninth, but were unable to close the gap. UTSA's Jeremy Filipek earned the save, allowing no runs on no hits in two-thirds of an inning.
The Panthers host the USF Bulls on Tuesday, April 7. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.ET.
