@FIUWSoccer Captures First Home Draw, 1-1 with Marshall

MIAMI (October 14, 2016) -- FIU played its fifth overtime game of the season and came away with its first home draw of the year after a 1-1 result at the FIU Soccer Stadium against visiting Conference USA foe Marshall Friday night in women's soccer action.

FIU is 2-8-3, 1-3-2 in Conference USA. Marshall is 4-6-4, 2-3-2 in conference action this season.

The two teams traded possession in the early going in an attempt to find a hole in the defense that didn't materialize in the opening period. Marshall led 6-3 in shot attempts at the half, with each keeper grabbing one save at the break.

The first scoring play came on an FIU corner in the 49th minute from freshman Isabella de Almagro (Pembroke Pines, Florida / American Heritage HS), who lifted a ball across the goal to the head of Jacky Manteas (Schloss Holte-Stukenbrokck, Germany), who used her height to head in a ball to the far post and her first goal of the season. It was de Almagro's first career assist.

The Thundering Herd leveled the contest with a tying goal in the 63rd minute, as Jordan Sackaris scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season, a blast off a tap pass from Shontelle Smith at the 18-yard line for the 1-1 tie.

The end of regulation saw the best chance of the contest for Marshall to come away with a win, as an endline cross came in front of net, and the crossing header was snagged by a twisting Sophia Trujillo (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep) for the save.

Trujillo had to make a leaping save in the second overtime, but the two teams managed only two shots each and one shot on goal apiece in the 20 extra minutes played.

Marshall produced 22 shots to FIU's 11, with Trujillo collecting a season-best 10 saves in the contest. Herd keeper Emily Moreland had four saves in the draw.

The Panthers finish the home weekend with a Sunday contest against conference-leading WKU, starting at 1 p.m.
