MIAMI (Oct. 21, 2016) – The FIU swimming and diving team (5-1) picked up a pair victories, defeating Nova Southeastern, 159-121, and Indian River State, 207-82, in the team's home-opener on Friday evening from the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.
Of the 16 total events, the Panthers claimed 10 first-place finishes, while recording season-best performances in five events.
"We were not as sharp this week," Head Coach
Randy Horner said. "The ladies swam well in events that were out of their comfort zones which was a positive."
FIU began the day taking first in the 200 Medley Relay as the team of
Jennifer Alfani,
Taylor Grabenhorst,
Letizia Bertelli and
Naomi Ruele notched a time of 1:44.31.
In the day's second event,
Oceane Peretti set a personal best in the 1000 Free, winning the event with a time of 10:35.64.
Kyna Pereira followed the up with a first-place finish in the 200 Free (1:51.74). The victory marked her second overall win in the event this season.
FIU continued its string of first-place finishes as
Skye Carey notched a season-best 56.19 in the 100 Back. Grabenhorst also notched as season-best time of 1:04.95 in the 100 Breast as FIU's top finisher (second). She also recorded a season-best time in the 400 IM (4:35.46).
Pereira won her second event of the day scoring a time of 52.54 in the 100 Free while Carey notched win number two with a time of 2:02.71 in the 200 Back.
Megan Bowen placed first in the 500 Free, making her collegiate debut in the event with a time of 5:06.71. Bertelli recorded a 5:08.99 as the Panthers' took the top two spots in the 500 Free.
In the 100 Fly, FIU placed first and second as
Jennifer Deist tallied a 57.97 followed by
Ally Mayhew who posted a 58.04.
Reigning Conference USA Diver of the Week
Rebecca Quesnel placed first in the both the 1-meter and 3-meter programs. The native of Burlington, Ontario, scored season-bests in both events with a 278.70 in the 1-meter and a 285.21 in the 3-meter.
The Panthers will next host North Florida on Saturday, Nov. 5. The dual meet is set for noon from the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.
