The Hits Just Keep on Coming in 10-1 FIU Victory over Seton Hall

Story Links

For the sixth consecutive game FIU cracked double digits in hits Sunday afternoon in a 10-1 pasting of Seton Hall. The Panthers (4-4) have taken the first three games of the series with the Pirates (2-5). The series finale is Tuesday evening at the FIU ballpark.

FIU collected 15 hits which comes on the heels of the Panthers putting up 10, 13, 16, 14, and 10 hits in their last five games entering Sunday.

The Panthers bashed 13 of their 15 hits in the first four innings Sunday. FIU wasted no time scoring three runs in the first inning, two runs in the second and four runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 9-1 lead.

After Irving Lopez and Jack Schaaf started the bottom of the first with consecutive singles off losing pitcher Zach Prendergast (1-1), JC Escarra roped a double down the right field line for a 2-0 FIU lead. Austin Rodriguez hit a sharp ground ball at second baseman Mike Caputo that took a wicked hop to Caputo's left into right field. The RBI single made it 3-0.

In the second, Lopez and Schaaf had back-to-back singles again. Zack Soria had an RBI single to score Lopez and Rodriguez's sacrifice fly to center scored Schaaf.

The Pirates scored their run in the third helped by an FIU error to chip the FIU lead to 5-1.

The Panthers struck back with four runs in the fourth. The big hits coming on an RBI double by Kenny Meimerstorf and a two-run double by Zach Files.

Schaaf led the hit parade going 3 for 4. Lopez, Soria, Escarra, and Meimerstorf each had two hits. Rodriguez drove in three runs. Escarra and Files had two RBI each.

Garrett Cave got the start for FIU and went 4 1/3 innings, allowed zero earned runs and struck out seven. Freshman Nate Pearson (1-0) recorded his first collegiate win in relief tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

FIU and Seton Hall wrap up the four-game series Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The game can be seen on PantherVision and heard on the FIU Sports Radio Network.
