Manhattan on the Rocks: FIU Ices Jaspers in 6-0 Shutout

Story Links

FIU got the bats going against Manhattan last year when it scored 46 runs in a four-game series. The Panthers continued the trend Friday night at the FIU ballpark with 14 hits off Manhattan pitching as they cruised to a 6-0 shutout of the Jaspers (2-7).

Andres Nunez and Nate Pearson combined for the Panthers' second shutout of the season – both by the same 6-0 score.

In the bottom of the second inning, FIU (7-9) used five singles to score three runs off Tom Cosgrove (0-2) and grab a 3-0 lead. The Panthers added two more runs in the fifth after Zach Files tripled home two runs with a drive into the right center field gap. Austin Rodriguez, who walked, and Nick Day, who singled, scored.

Files led the 14-hit attack going 3 for 4 with three RBI. Irving Lopez, who drove in the first FIU run in the second inning, was also 3 for 4. Nick Day and Zack Soria each had two hits.

Nunez (2-1) only had to work out of two minor jams over seven innings. The Jaspers had two runners on with one out in the top of the third before Nunez struck out the final two batters to end the inning. Manhattan had the same situation in the seventh and Nunez struck out Anthony Rocchietti and got Jose Carrera to pop out to center.

Nunez allowed six hits and struck out six in seven innings. Pearson worked the final two scoreless innings to preserve the shutout.

The Panthers and Jaspers play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. from the FIU ballpark. The doubleheader can be heard on the FIU Sports Radio Network.
