TAMPA — FIU hit a season-high seven doubles against South Florida to fuel a 6-5 win Tuesday night at USF Baseball Stadium in Tampa.
After a recent stretch where the Panthers had 55 singles among their last 62 hits, FIU (20-22) used three RBI doubles in the top of the seventh inning to rally from a 4-3 deficit to defeat USF (19-22).
Zack Soria led off the seventh with a walk and
Zach Files followed with an RBI double to tie the score 4-4.
Austin Rodriguez then reached base on a fielder's choice after Files was thrown out at third base by shortstop Coco Montes. A couple of pitches later, Rodriguez alertly pulled off a delayed steal of second base before
Irving Lopez laced a double down the left field line scoring Rodriguez with the go-ahead run.
Kenny Meimerstorf added to the RBI double parade in the seventh scoring Lopez on a two-bagger into the left field corner. FIU led 6-4 after seven innings.
FIU reliever
Michael Agis started and pitched a season-high 4 2/3 innings, allowed five hits, four runs and struck out six. The FIU bullpen followed with 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball — that included two scoreless innings from
Willy Fabra (2-2).
Williams Durruthy wrapped up the victory with his sixth save.
Files gave FIU a 3-1 lead in the third inning with a two-run home run to right center. Files was 3 for 4 with three RBI and fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
Lopez and Schaaf each had two hits, which were two doubles for each player. Files, Meimerstorf and
Rey Perez had the other three doubles for FIU.
On deck, the Panthers travel to Louisville where they will face the No. 6 Cardinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday evening. The game was moved up 90 minutes from its originally scheduled 6:30 p.m. start time. The game can be heard on the FIU Sports Radio Network.
