Miami (December 13, 2017) -- FIU swimming and diving is back in the pool for its final dual meet of the calendar year, taking on Georgia Southern Thursday, December 14, at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center. Action begins at 4 p.m. FIU, ranked eighth in the latest CollegeSwimming.com mid-major poll, is 4-3 in duals this season.
Â
Due to Hurricane Irma, the fall semester was extended one week for missed classes, meaning this event, previously scheduled after exams, comes in the midst of the tail end of the exams period.
Â
"This meet is a little different than we had planned," said FIU Head Coach
Randy Horner.
Â
"A handful of our athletes will miss this meet due to having exams in the afternoon as a few are not done with finals. Our main goal is to get back into competition and shake the rust off a bit."
Â
FIU's last competition came in the Purdue Invitational, November 16-18. That marked an unofficial midway point of the season, as coaches and athletes tapered off from the intense training regimen, while still maintaining their practice time in a "rest and recover" phase after Purdue. This dual marks the beginning of the next phase of the competition season. FIU will continue to train over the winter break and head to the Orange Bowl Swim Classic on January 3 before hosting the FIU Sprint Invite on January 5. They will have four more dual events prior to the Conference USA Championships, which take place February 21-24 in Atlanta.
Â
The two programs met up in Jacksonville on October 7, with FIU sending a split squad up to face the Eagles and posting a 145-117 victory. The remainder of the team was competing in the FIU Fall Classic at home that day. Georgia Southern is 2-4 in dual meets this season.
Â
Times and scores will be posted following the meet at FIUSports.com.
