Charlotte got a hit-and-run RBI double from T.J. Nichting and scored two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to defeat FIU, 4-0, Friday night in the opener of Conference USA play for both teams at the FIU ballpark.
After Nichting's bloop double to right off FIU starter
Robert Garcia (1-3), the 49ers (12-6, 1-0 C-USA) drew two bases loaded walks from Garcia to increase their lead to 3-0.
Charlotte starter Colton Laws (2-0) limited the Panthers (11-8, 0-1) to three hits over seven scoreless innings and struck out five batters. Matt Brooks pitched the final two frames to secure the shutout.
Garcia pitched seven innings, allowed four hits, three runs, walked four and struck out eight batters.
