FIU freshman right-hander
Nick MacDonald quieted the recently noisy UAB bats and the Panthers got four consecutive hits in the fourth and another home run from
Nick Day to beat the Blazers, 6-2, Sunday afternoon at the FIU ballpark.
By winning Sunday, FIU (16-11, 5-4 Conference USA) took two of three games from UAB (15-13, 4-5). The Panthers have now won six of their last seven series this season.
UAB came into the series with FIU hitting .234 with just five home runs on the season. But the Blazers collected 14 runs, 26 hits and four home runs in the first two games of the series.
MacDonald (4-0) put an end to the Blazers' hitting success Sunday. The freshman pitched six innings, allowed five hits and no earned runs to record his team-leading fourth win of the season. MacDonald also leads FIU with a 2.05 ERA.
For the second consecutive game FIU benefited from shoddy UAB pitching. FIU got its first two runs on just one hit.
In the first inning,
Zach Files walked and came around to score after two wild pitches by UAB starter Garrett Whitlock (3-3) to open the scoring.
Brewer Hicklen's RBI double in the top of the second tied the score 1-1.
In the bottom of the second, Day reached base after striking out on a wild pitch.
Jack Schaaf was hit by a pitch and
Kobe Lopez reached on a fielder's choice. With the bases loaded, UAB catcher Stephen Dobbs tried to pick off Lopez at first base but the throw sailed over first baseman Carter Pharis into right field allowing Day to score and give FIU a 2-1 lead.
FIU strung together four straight hits in the fourth inning to extend its lead.
Kenny Meimerstorf and
JC Escarra hit consecutive doubles to start the frame. Day and Schaaf followed with singles to make it 5-1 FIU.
Day cranked out his third home run of the series in the sixth – a solo shot into the soccer field beyond the left field wall. Day was 5 for 9 with three home runs and five RBI in the series.
On deck, FIU hits the road for a week to Mississippi. The Panthers play a two-game series at Mississippi State starting Tuesday and then finish the week with a three-game set at Southern Miss.
