Â
The Basics
- The FIU men's soccer team kicked off the 2017 campaign – and the
Kevin Nylen era – on Friday night with a 1-1 draw against James Madison on the first day of the 12th-Annual Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic, hosted by Ohio State University. The match was the season-opener for both schools.
Â
- The Panthers and Dukes played to a 0-0 tie through the first half, however it only took 51 seconds into the second stanza for FIU to get on the board when Conference USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year
Santiago Patino (Orlando, Fla./Freedom) took a pass from
Marvin Hezel (Waldshut, Germany/SC Freiburg) and beat JMU keeper TJ Bush from 12 yards out to the back right corner of the net. It was Patino's first goal of the season.
Â
- The Dukes knotted the game at one-apiece in the 65
th minute as Niclas Mohn was served a pass from Joe Vyner to the left wing and buried the shot past
Hugo Fauroux at the left post.
Â
- JMU held a slight 13-12 shot advantage at the end of regulation, however FIU outshot the Dukes 3-1 in the overtime session, although none came on net.
Â
- Fauroux recorded six saves on the afternoon, including four in the second half of regulation.
Â
- Friday's draw is the first blemish for the Panthers against the Dukes in the all-time series. Coming into the match, FIU held a 4-0 record against JMU.
Â
Stat of the Game
- Despite the Panthers holding a slight edge in shots (15-14), the Dukes recorded seven of the 11 shots on goal, however could not capitalize.
Quotes from the Pitch
