Â
The Basics
- The FIU men's soccer team turned in a dominating performance on Sunday night to pick up its first win of the season – and the first career head coaching win for the Panthers'
Kevin Nylen – as FIU defeated Ohio State, 3-0, on the final day of the 12th-Annual Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic, hosted by the Buckeyes. The win improves the Panthers to 1-0-1 on the year while Ohio State falls to 1-1.
Â
-
Santiago Patino (Orlando, Fla./Freedom) got the scoring started off in the sixth minute taking a pass from
Inigo Sagarduy (Coral Gables, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) and buried his second goal of the season, and weekend, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
- The duo of
Alessandro Campoy (Miami, Fla./Imaculate-LaSalle) and Sagarduy then took over early on in the second half to put the match out of reach for good. Just over a minute into the second stanza, in the 46
th minute Campoy took a pass from Sagarduy and beat Ohio State goalkeeper Parker Siegfried. Then 12 minutes later Sagarduy served up a pass to Campoy who, again, beat Siegfried in the 58
th minute. The two goals were the first and second of Campoy's career.
Â
- FIU outshot the Buckeyes 12-5 on the night.
Â
- FIU keeper
Hugo Fauroux (Cannes, France) had a relatively uneventful evening making just one save en route to his first FIU win.
Â
- Four Panthers took home hardware for their play during the weekend. Patino, Fauroux,
Paul Marie (Saint Aubindes Bois, France) and
Marvin Hezel (Waldshut, Germany) were named to the All-Classic team while Patino also earned Most Valuable Player.
Â
Stat of the Game
- The Panthers were certainly the aggressor against the Buckeyes, holding a commanding 6-1 edge in shots on goal.
