MIAMI (Nov. 10, 2018) - The Panthers welcomed George Washington University for a two-day match play style tournament on the home turf.
The FIU Invitational which took place on Friday Nov. 9-10 marked the final fall slate of the season. The Panthers defeated the Colonials overall 7-1, which includes a clean doubles sweep 2-0.
The freshman-duo of
Paulina Bakaite and
Kamila Umarova set the tone on day one when they defeated Colonials Maria Siopacha and Melis Bayraktaroglu 6-3. In singles play, the Panthers dominated all but one match. Senior
Maryna Veksler defeated Maria Siopacha 6-3, 6-2 and Freshman Maria Solynshkina fought hard in a long three-set match, but was out scored by Melis Bayraktaroglu 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Junior Mariia Turillo went on to seal the deal with a win over Victoria Kogan 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, putting the Panthers up 3-1 for the day.
FIU went undefeated on day two. The powerhouse pair of Umarova and Freshman
Basak Akbas defeated George Washington's Victoria Kogan and Siopacha 6-0. Later, the Panthers swept all three singles match ups, Sophomore
Sandra Bozinovic defeated Siopacha 6-3, 7-5. Bakaite bested Kogan 6-0, 6-2 and after almost two-hours in the scorching hot sun Akbas went on to defeat Bayraktaroglu in a three-set triumph, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

The Panthers will return back in action on Jan. 11-13. They will open up the regular season at home against Wisconsin and Iowa State.
