FIU (7-10), Marshall (8-8-3)
Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018 | 2 p.m.
Conference USA Tournament | First Round
Charlotte, North Carolina | Transamerica Field
Â
The Basics
- The FIU men's soccer team was looking to go on a run in the 2018 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Men's Soccer Championships that would take them back to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year, however, Marshall had other ideas as the Thundering Herd defeated the Panthers, 2-1, in the quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon at Transamerica Field in Charlotte. FIU finishes the year 7-10 overall, while Marshall improves to 8-8-3
Â
- With Marshall leading by one goal, 2-1,
Santiago Patino (Orlando, Florida/Freedom) was taken down in the box with 40 seconds left in regulation leading to a penalty kick for the senior All-American forward, who was a perfect 3-for-3 on PKs during the season. Patino, however, put his shot high over the Marshall goalkeepers head and off the crossbar. Patino, who was the second leading scorer in C-USA this season with 12 goals, and the leagues leader in goals scored in conference games with seven, went scoreless on the day, despite leading the team in shots with five and shots on goal with three.
Â
- After a scoreless tie at the break, Marshall struck less than 90 second into the second stanza to take a 1-0 lead. It wasn't until 30 minutes later that
Adam Hassan (Davie, Florida/Western) got the Panthers on the board, in the 74th minute, when he gathered a loose ball in the box and beat Marshall goalkeeper, Paulo Pita. FIU was forced to play a man down when
Jules Desportes (Washington, D.C.) was issued a red card in the 82' minute. The Thundering Herd took advantage getting the game winner a minute later, in the 83rd minute on an Illal Osmanu goal off a rebound off the post.
Quotable
"It's devastating ending a season and  I'm crushed for the players, I feel for each of them. To the seniors, thank you for your wearing the FIU jersey, you will be missed. To the underclassmen, we have a lot of work ahead and we keep our heads up." Â
- FIU Head Coach Kevin Nylen
