The Basics
- The No. 11-ranked FIU beach volleyball team dropped its first match of the 2018 season on Friday during the first day of competition at the Hampton Inn Capital-University Invitational, hosted by Florida State University in Tallahassee. The Panthers, in their only match of the afternoon, dropped a tight 3-2 decision to the College of Charleston. The setback snaps FIU's four-game winning streak to start the year. The Panthers drop to 4-1 overall and even at 1-1 in Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) play. The Cougars open the year at 1-0 overall and in CCSA.
- FIU led the Cougars, 2-1, after wins at the No 4 spot, when
Estefanie Bethancourt and
Natalia Giron began the day with a 21-11 victory; and the No. 1 position, with a 21-13, 21-15 win by
Federica Frasca and
Margherita Bianchin. Charleston, however stepped up and took the final two matches to secure the match win. Both winning pairs improved to 5-0 on the year and remain the Panthers only undefeated tandems.
- The loss is FIU's first-ever setback to Charleston in three all-time meetings.
