Lorenzo Hampton Jr.'s solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning sparked FIU to a six-run frame and a 7-2 win over Jacksonville State on Sunday afternoon at the FIU ballpark.
The Panthers improved to 5-6 while the Gamecocks are now 8-3.
Tied 1-1 in the seventh, Hampton connected off JSU starter Colton Pate with a solo drive deep into the FIU soccer field beyond the left field wall.
With one out in the inning,
Adan Fernandez singled and
Juan Teixeira was hit by a pitch.
Will Saxton and
Christian Khawam followed with RBI singles to increase the Panthers lead to 4-1.
Eddie Silva capped off the inning with a bases-clearing three-run double to make it 7-1. Silva was 6 for 13 with two home runs and nine RBI in the three-game series.
Saxton got FIU on the scoreboard with a solo home run down the right field line in the fifth inning. It was Saxton's first college home run. He was 2 for 4 with two RBI.
For the second straight Sunday FIU got a terrific start from freshman left-hander
Logan Allen.
After allowing one earned run in six innings against Grambling last Sunday, Allen again allowed just one earned run over six innings against JSU. Allen struck out a career-high 10 batters against the Gamecocks.
Christian Santana pitched 2 1/3 relief innings to record the win.
In the top of the seventh with the potential go-ahead run on third base for JSU and two outs, Santana relieved
Greyson Fletcher and struck out Nolan Greckel to end the threat.
On deck for FIU, the Panthers take on Miami (Fla.) Wednesday night from the FIU ballpark. The Panthers defeated the Hurricanes in three out of four games last season. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
