PORT CHARLOTTE -- St. Joseph's edged FIU, 3-2, in a tight pitchers' duel at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte on Friday from North Charlotte Regional Park.
The Panthers are now 6-7. The Hawks improved to 3-5.
FIU sophomore right-hander
Tyler Myrick and SJU junior right-hander Tim Brennan matched zeroes until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Hawks scored three runs.
SJU collected three straight hits off Myrick and reliever
Gio Soto and had another RBI single later in the inning to score its three runs.
Myrick (1-1) went six innings, allowed two earned runs and struck out five.
Brennan (2-1) pitched scoreless baseball until he ran into trouble in the top of the ninth.
Pinch-hitter
Adan Fernandez and
Austin Shenton had back-to-back singles to start the final frame.
Logan Allen was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Before
Eddie Silva was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score FIU's second run, Brennan uncorked a wild pitch to plate the first FIU run. However, that was as close as the Panthers would come.
FIU continues play at the Snowbird Baseball Classic on Saturday with a doubleheader against two different teams. The Panthers play Western Michigan at 1:30 p.m. and then meet George Mason in the nightcap at 5 p.m.
