SAN ANTONIO – Ben Brookover's three-run home run rallied UTSA past FIU, 12-4, in the first game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio.
The Roadrunners (20-16, 8-7 Conference USA) took the first game of a three-game series with the Panthers (17-20, 7-9 C-USA).
FIU built a 3-1 lead early in the game. The Panthers scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings.
Austin Shenton singled and scored on a triple by
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr. in the top of the first.
Adan Fernandez hit a solo home run in the second inning to extend the FIU lead to 2-0.
In the fourth ahead 2-1, the Panthers executed a squeeze bunt to add their third run.
Will Saxton doubled with one out and later scored from third base when
Derek Cartaya dropped a bunt down the first base line. Cartaya hustled to beat out the bunt for a hit.
However, the Roadrunners struck for three runs in the fifth off starter
Logan Allen (4-5) with Brookover's sixth home run of the season. UTSA added two more runs in the sixth and broke open the game in the eighth with six runs.
Cartaya and
Javier Valdes each had two hits for FIU.
Jose Garcia hit his team-leading ninth home run of the season. It was a solo shot to lead off the eighth.
