FIU scored nine runs in two innings to blow open a scoreless game with Miami and defeat the Hurricanes, 14-6, on Wednesday night at Alex Rodriguez Park in Coral Gables.
The Panthers (19-21) swept the crosstown season series against the Hurricanes (17-23). FIU defeated UM, 5-3, at Infinity Insurance Park on March 7.
FIU also won the crosstown series with UM for the second consecutive season. The Panthers have now won six of the last eight games against the Hurricanes.
In a 0-0 game in the top of the fifth, FIU knocked three straight hits off UM starter Chris McMahon (1-1) to take a 3-0 lead.
Juan Teixeira hit a one-out double into the left center field gap to get the Panthers going. One batter later,
Logan Allen drove home Teixeira with a single to right.
Austin Shenton's single to center scored Allen.
Eddie Silva smacked a line drive triple to right center to bring home Shenton.
The Panthers put up a six-spot in the sixth inning to make it 9-0.
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr. started the inning with a single to left center and
Adan Fernandez reached on an error. After a sacrifice bunt by
Javier Valdes, pinch-hitter
Christian Khawam lined a single off UM reliever Michael Mediavilla into center field scoring Hampton and Fernandez.
Allen doubled home Khawam to increase the lead to 6-0. After Shenton walked, Silva blasted a three-run home run over the center field wall and the Panthers had a commanding 9-0 advantage.
It was Silva's ninth home run of the season, putting him one behind team leader
Jose Garcia, who has 10.
In the seventh inning, Fernandez launched a solo home run over the left field scoreboard that made the score 10-3. The home run was number six for the freshman and the 50
th on the season for the Panthers, who lead Conference USA in the long ball department.
Valdes clubbed FIU's 51
st home run of 2018 when he deposited a three-run shot over the left field wall in the eighth. The homer was Valdes's third round-tripper of the season.
It was a bullpen game for FIU, which used seven relievers, including senior
Chandler Raiden, who made his first career start. Raiden pitched two scoreless innings.
Sophomore right-hander
Jose Machado was the beneficiary of the nine runs. Machado (2-0) was the pitcher of record during his teammates' offensive outburst in the middle innings. Machado pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowed three runs and struck out four.
On deck, FIU returns home to take on Marshall in a three-game Conference USA series. The Panthers and Thundering Herd open the series Friday at 7 p.m. from Infinity Insurance Park.
