FIREWORKS IN THE FOURTH: FIU launches 3 HRs in 4th in 12-7 win over B-CU

FIU hit three home runs and scored eight runs against Bethune-Cookman in the fourth inning Tuesday night to fuel the Panthers' 12-7 win over the Wildcats at Infinity Insurance Park.

Down 4-0, FIU (14-16) sent 14 batters to the plate against three B-CU (10-19) pitchers in the fateful fourth. With one out in the inning, FIU collected four straight hits against Wildcats starter Jordan Pinto (0-1), including a pair of two-run home runs to tie the score.

Eddie Silva hit a two-run home run after Austin Shenton singled. Jose Garcia tripled and Lorenzo Hampton, Jr. followed with a towering two-run shot to left center. Silva and Hampton each have seven home runs now second to Shenton and Garcia, who each have eight homers.

With two outs in the fourth, Javier Valdes and Juan Teixeira hit consecutive singles. Michael Harkcom brought them both home with a three-run home run down the left field line to give the Panthers a 7-4 lead. It was Harkcom's first collegiate home run.

FIU capped off the scoring in the fourth when Garcia drew a bases loaded walk to make it 8-4.

B-CU narrowed the deficit to 8-6 in the top of the fifth but FIU answered with four more runs in the bottom of the inning.

Adan Fernandez and Valdes opened the frame with consecutive singles. Teixeira reached on an error by shortstop Nate Sterijevski allowing Fernandez to score.

Logan Allen added a two-run single and Garcia had an RBI single for the 12th FIU run.

Shenton and Valdes each had three hits. Garcia was 2 for 3 with two RBI. Harkcom had three RBI. Allen, Silva, and Hampton each drove in two runs.

FIU used eight pitchers in the game – all relievers, who allowed just three earned runs. Jose Machado (1-0) recorded his first collegiate win with a scoreless fourth.

The Panthers hit the road again for their next series. FIU plays a three-game set at UAB beginning Friday night in Birmingham, Alabama. First pitch on Friday is at 7:30 p.m.
