Middle Tennessee Eliminates @FIUSoftball in 2018 C-USA Championship, 4-0

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Middle Tennessee pitcher Cori Jennings pitched a gem to eliminate FIU, 4-0, Wednesday night in the fourth game of the 2018 C-USA Championship. FIU sophomore pitcher Shannon Saile added to her single-season strikeout record (267) with eight more punch outs, but the Blue Raiders (36-20) scored four runs on 10 hits.

FIU (30-25) had two baserunners the entire night on a walk and an error as Jennings picked up a no-hitter against the Panthers. She threw a complete-game, striking out four and allowing just one walk facing two over the minimum.

The Panthers had a couple of good defensive plays to keep them in the game early. FIU got out of the jam in the top of the first inning after Middle Tennessee put runners on with a single and walk with no outs. A throwing error allowed a third straight runner on base, but FIU then caught two Blue Raiders on rundowns on the same play to get the first two outs of the game. Saile got a foul out to the catcher to end the threat.

It stayed scoreless until the top of the fourth inning. Middle Tennessee left fielder Keely McGee singled to left field with two outs scoring the first two runs of the game giving the Blue Raiders a 2-0 lead. The Blue Raiders took advantage of a single, a hit-by-pitch with two outs, a passed ball and wild pitch to get runners in scoring position.

The Blue Raiders pulled away the next two innings with a solo home run in the sixth and a leadoff triple in the top of the seventh that scored on an RBI groundout to make for the final score.

The Panthers had baserunners with two outs in the second on an error when Venessa Gallegos reached and in the bottom of the seventh with two outs when Jessica Rivera walked.

FIU entered the 2018 Championship with a No. 56 RPI. Barring an at-large bid to an NCAA Softball Championship Regional, the Panthers will conclude their season 30-25 overall.
