Game Details
FIU 5, North Florida 3
FIU (3-5), North Florida (1-7)
Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018 | 7 p.m.
Jacksonville, Florida | Hodges Stadium
Â
The Basics
- The FIU men's soccer team traveled to Jacksonville to face North Florida (UNF) on Sunday night, and came out looking to make a statement, and they did just that netting three goals in the first 14 minutes of the match en route to a 5-3 win over the Ospreys. The Panthers improve to 3-5 on the year while UNF drops to 1-7.
Â
- FIU's five goals is the most scored this season and the most since a 5-2 win at South Carolina on Oct. 14, 2017. It was also just the sixth time in the past 10 years – with three of those six goals scored in the last two seasons – that the Panthers netted five goals in a match.
Â
- Four players scored goals for the Panthers, however it was
Andrew Booth (Tamarac, Florida/University) that had the big night, with the best match of his collegiate career. Booth figured in each goal in the first half, with three assists, and netted his first career goal, coming in the 14' minute, accounting for his five points on the night. Coming into tonight's contest, Booth had scored just one point – an assist this season at Marshall on Sept. 2 – in 37 career games at FIU.
Â
-
Santiago Patino (Orlando, Florida/Freedom) got the scoring started off – and did so quickly – taking a pass from Booth and beating the Ospreys' goalkeeper, Philip D'Amico in the 4' minute.
Owen Green followed just seven minutes later, with his first career goal, taking a pass from Booth and beating the North Florida defender on a breakaway and sending a shot from just inside the box on the right and sending it to the low left post.
Â
- After Booth's goal in the 14' minute, UNF got on the board when Mikey Connell beat FIU goalkeeper
Daniel Gagliardi (Plantation, Florida/St. Thomas Aquinas) on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 40' minute.
Joris Ahlinvi (Bordeaux, France), however, put the Panthers back up three goals with his fourth goal of the year, off Booth's third assist of the half, in the 42' minute.
Â
- Starting the second half, Zane Budd cut the FIU lead to two, 4-2, off a nice header on a corner kick from Connell in the 59' minute. Patino, however, would have none of that as he connected on his second goal of the match, and the sixth of the season, in the 60' minute. It would also be Patino's second multi-goal match of the season and the ninth of his career.
Â
- Connell made things interesting in the closing minutes of the contest, scoring on a penalty kick in the 83' minute to make the score, 5-3, but the Ospreys couldn't get any closer.
Â
Quotable
"A solid win on the road for the team tonight; it was a team result. We now focus our attention to conference and getting back to work this week. We must continue to be better defensively."
– FIU Head Coach Kevin Nylen
Â
Stat of the Match
FIU, who tallied three of its five goals in the first 14 minutes of the contest against North Florida, were just three goals shy of equaling its total goals scored for the season. Additionally, the Panthers equaled their goal production from the previous four matches.
