HATTIESBURG, Mississippi (Oct. 4, 2019) - The FIU women's soccer team fell to Southern Miss on the road by a score of 3-0, as the Panthers completed the first match of a weekend series.
The Panthers' record now stands at 2-9 for the 2019 season, while the Golden Eagles improve to 6-5. FIU holds an 0-4 record in C-USA play this year, while Southern Miss stands at 1-2 in conference play.
Southern Miss got on the board in the opening half when Arial Diaz scored in the 10th minute to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage over FIU. The Panthers fell behind 2-0 in the 37th minute after a penalty kick was awarded to Southern Miss. FIU fired away two shots in the opening half but was unable to shorten the deficit before the break. Sophomore Ashley Adams and Laura Chavez each had shot attempts for the Panthers.
FIU had more chances in the second half as the Blue & Gold placed four shots-on-goal and increased their attacking pressure, but a successful header by Southern Miss allowed the Golden Eagles to extend their lead. The Panthers led in the shot margin 4-3 after the break, but in the end were unable to find the back of the net as FIU fell by a score of 3-0.
Laura Chavez led the Panthers with two shots-on-goal, while Ellen Halseth, Charity O' Neal, and Carmen Marin each contributed one shot-on-goal. Ashley Adams, Sierra Moss, and Olivia Sandahl all logged a full 90 minutes in the match.

The Panthers wrap up their two-game road series on Sunday, when they travel to Louisiana Tech for a battle with the Bulldogs. Kickoff for the match is set for 2 p.m. ET.
