WASHINGTON D.C. – The FIU men's basketball team took on Eastern Kentucky as a part of the Battle for the Capital Tournament at the New Entertainment & Sports Arena on Friday. The Panthers topped the Colonels 89-70 to move to 2-0 during tournament play.
With the victory, FIU moves to 3-2 for the season, while EKU drops to 3-3 with the loss.
In the first half, the Panther squad shot 61.5% from the field and 44.4% from three. The FIU bench outscored Eastern Kentucky 9-4, and the team held the 24-6 advantage in the paint. Individually, Devon Andrews led all FIU players with 14 points for the half, and the team went into the break with the 41-31 lead.
Coming out of the locker room, the team continued its fiery offense, closing out the win shooting 56.7% from the field. The squad forced 24 turnovers, resulting in 23 points, and three players finished with double-figure scoring to help the the Panthers defeat the Colonels 89-70.
Andrews closed out the contest as the team's leader with 24 points and eight rebounds. Osasumwen Osaghae followed closely behind with 22 points, and the senior also logged five blocks to bring his career total to 153.
