MIAMI (Dec. 19, 2019) – The FIU women's basketball team picked up a victory to tipoff the Holiday Hoops Showdown, as the Panthers defeated Grambling State, 56-55.
The win on the season is the third overall for FIU.
FIU was led by
Chelsea Guimaraes, as she filled out the stat sheet with 15 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, two assists and a steal. GSU's Ariel Williams led her team with 18 points, six assists, five rebounds, two steals and a block.
After trailing to start the game, the Panthers battled back to take a 28-25 lead into halftime. FIU and GSU found themselves tied at 53-53 with under three minutes left in the game, before a layup and free throw by
Fujika Nimmo gave the Panthers a 56-53 lead. A GSU jumper would cut the lead to a point, but the Panther defense would hold on as FIU earned the 56-55 victory.
