MIAMI (Feb. 27, 2019) – Despite reeling off six unanswered runs on Wednesday night, the FIU baseball team dropped a 10-8 decision to the Miami Hurricanes to cap midweek action.
FIU trailed 10-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, before the Panthers scored six unanswered runs and put a scare into the Hurricanes.
The Panthers and Hurricanes played to an electric atmosphere on Wednesday night, as 1,923 fans packed the FIU Baseball Stadium. The 1,923 in attendance marked the most for the Panthers since 2,112 watched FIU take on UM on Jan. 29, 2006.
With the loss, the Panthers fall to 3-4 overall on the season while the Hurricanes move to 6-2 on the year. Freshman hurler
Franco Aleman took the loss on the bump, falling to 0-1 on the young season, after giving up four runs in 2.1 innings pitched.
At the plate, FIU's
Seth Cannady,
Austin Shenton and
Javier Valdes each knocked homers against Hurricane pitchers on Wednesday night. Valdes finished the night with four RBIs, after going 3-for-4 with a homer, double, single and a walk to cap his great night with the bat.
The Hurricanes jumped ahead in the third inning after scoring four runs, before Shenton crushed a homer to the outfield garden for his second long ball of the season. With the score at 4-1, UM plated three more runs to extend its lead to 7-1 in the fourth inning before Valdes knocked a solo shot in the bottom half to bring the margin to 7-2.
After falling behind 10-2, the Panthers began their comeback in the seventh frame as a Valdes two-run double and Cannady two-run homer narrowed the deficit to 10-6. Down to their last three outs, the Panthers gave a scare to the Hurricanes as a single by Valdes brought home
Jarrett Ford before a Cannady SAC fly scored
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr. to narrow the gap to just 10-8. FIU's rally would end however with a fly out by
Logan Allen to end the game.
