JACKSONVILLE, Alabama (March 1, 2019) – On a crisp cool night in central Alabama, the FIU baseball team downed the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in a 2-1 pitcher's duel.
Friday night saw a dominating performance on the mound from
Logan Allen. The sophomore went five scoreless innings while only giving up two hits and striking out 12 Gamecocks. Allen was ultimately given a no-decision for his efforts.
Jose Machado picked up the win for FIU after striking out a Gamecock batter in his one-third of an inning. Jacksonville State's Austin Brewster was handed the loss.
The Friday matchup was scoreless until the sixth inning, when
Javier Valdes tripled off the centerfield wall.
Jose Garcia brought home Valdes with a seeing-eye single to the left side on the very next pitch.
Jacksonville State tied the game in the eighth with solo home run. Not to be out done,
Austin Shenton stepped into a 1-1 pitch and lifted it over the center field wall for the game-winning hit.
Will Saxton sealed the FIU win with a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the season.
UP NEXT
The Panthers and the Gamecocks will play a doubleheader on Saturday due to wet weather in the forecast for Sunday. Game one is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET with game two coming 30-45 minutes after the conclusion of game two.
