JACKSONVILLE, Alabama (March 2, 2019) – The FIU baseball team improved to 5-5 on the season after winning it's first weekend series of the year against Jacksonville State.
FIU dropped the first game of the day to the Gamecocks by a score of 3-1 before rallying to win game the night cap on Saturday, 5-2.
FIU's
Christian Santana picked up the win in game two after pitching five and two-thirds innings of two-run ball. The sophomore also fanned five. JSU's Tyler Wilburn was handed the loss.
Javier Valdes led the way offensively for the Panthers going one-for-two with two walks and a critical two-run home run in the sixth.
JSU opened the scoring with a home run in the second, before
John Rodriguez tied the game with a double that scored
Logan Allen.
The Gamecocks briefly regained the lead in the fourth. That lead only lasted till the sixth when Jarret Ford scored from first on an
Austin Shenton single. Shenton was driven in by a Valdes moon shot to left.
FIU added an insurance run when
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr. beat out a potential double-play ball to score
Derek Cartaya.
Greyson Fletcher pitched two scoreless innings to seal the series win for the Panthers.
In game one, FIU jumped out to an early lead on a Shenton RBI single that scored
Kobe Lopez. JSU answered with three in the fifth and held the lead for the rest of the game.
Shenton and Hampton each had a pair of hits in game one.
Nick MacDonald was dealt the loss and JSU's Trey Fortner was given the win. Christian Edwards was given the save for the Gamecocks.

The Panthers return home for a six-game homestand that starts on Tuesday, March 5th at 7:00 p.m. against Florida A&M.
