MIAMI (Feb. 27, 2019) – Head Coach
Butch Davis announced on Wednesday the promotion of
Kenard Lang and
Bryn Renner to the FIU football coaching staff, as the Panthers restructure the defense ahead of the spring season.
"We're very excited to announce the promotion of
Kenard Lang and
Bryn Renner to our coaching staff," Head Coach
Butch Davis said. "I've known these two men for a very long time, and their work ethic and philosophies match what we are trying to instill here at FIU."
Lang will take over the defensive line coaching duties, while Renner will serve as the cornerbacks coach. Lang served as a defensive analyst for the Panthers in 2018, while Renner has served as FIU's recruiting coordinator.
Both Lang and Renner have ties to Davis prior to FIU. As Lang was coached by Davis at the University of Miami in the late 1990s and again while with the Cleveland Browns from 2002-04. Renner was recruited out of high school by Davis at the University of North Carolina.
Both newly promoted coaches had successful NFL careers as well after their time in college. Lang was selected 17th overall in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Redskins after his decorated collegiate career at UM, where he played under Davis. Lang played for the Redskins, the Cleveland Browns and Denver Broncos, before capping his NFL career with 449 tackles, 55.0 sacks and 15 forced fumbles. After his time with the Tar Heels, Renner was a member of the Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, San Diego Chargers and Pittsburg Steelers before making his transition to coaching.
Entering its 18th year of football in 2019, the FIU Panthers are coming off a program-best nine wins a season ago. FIU capped 2018 with a 35-32 victory over Toledo in the Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl to finish the season 9-4 overall. Under legendary head coach
Butch Davis, the Panthers have earned back-to-back bowl appearances and 17 wins in the last two years.
