MIAMI — FIU football's Shamir Sterlin has been selected to the AFCA Allstate Good Works Team, an honor that recognizes Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) student-athletes who exemplify outstanding community service, academic excellence and athletic achievement.
 
Sterlin, a sophomore safety, is one of 162 student-athletes nationwide to earn a nomination for the prestigious award, which honors individuals for their impact both on and off the field.
 
The Port St. Lucie, Florida, native has made a lasting impact throughout his community. As a board member for Pick Up for Cancer Inc., Sterlin helps lead community cleanups and recycling initiatives, with proceeds from recycled materials supporting cancer research. He also volunteers as a coach at Treasure Coast High School, mentoring young student-athletes while promoting leadership, teamwork and personal development.
 
In addition, Sterlin serves as a youth leader with END It, where he mentors and educates children through faith-based activities, workshops and recreational programs. He also regularly volunteers with Grace Way Village and JC Missions in Fort Pierce, providing food, clothing and encouragement to individuals and families in need.
 
The recognition marks Sterlin's second consecutive selection to the AFCA Allstate Good Works Team, adding to an already impressive list of accomplishments off the field that includes earning the Conference USA Fall Spirit of Service Award.
 
On the field, Sterlin is poised for another standout season after appearing in all 12 games for the Panthers in 2025. He earned Conference USA All-Freshman Team and Honorable Mention All-CUSA honors after totaling 65 tackles, two interceptions and six pass breakups, finishing fourth on the team in tackles. Entering the 2026 campaign, Sterlin has been named Preseason First Team All-CUSA by Athlon Sports, Preseason Second Team All-CUSA by Phil Steele, and named to the CUSA Preseason Watch List.
