FIU Tops Seton Hall For the Weekend Sweep

Panthers win forth-straight, host Stetson on Tuesday.

MIAMI (March 10, 2019) – On a picturesque day for baseball, the FIU baseball team won it's fourth-straight game 6-5, to sweep Seton Hall

The Panthers improved to 9-6 on the season. Seton Hall will head back to New Jersey with a 1-9 record.

FIU's four-game win streak is tied for the longest win streak since the beginning of the 2018 season and is also tied for the second longest such streak in the Mervyl Melendez era.

Everett Hurst claimed his second win of the season on Sunday after pitching two scoreless innings of one-hit ball in relief. Seton Hall's Blaise Panzini was burdened the loss.

Momentum shifted on one swing of the bat Sunday afternoon when Juan Teixeira stepped to the plate with two out and two on in the sixth inning. The junior outfielder crushed the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to give the Panthers a 5-4 lead. The FIU trio of Austin Senton, Adan Fernandez and Lorenzo Hampton, Jr. each added an RBI in the game.

Seton Hall scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead before Derek Cartaya, Shenton and Javier Valdes all walked to start the game. Cartaya scored when Seton Hall plunked Fernandez. Shenton later scored on a Hampton sac fly.

The Pirates added a run via a solo shot in the third to make it 4-2 before Teixeira's blast put FIU out front for good.

Cartaya reached in the seventh by way of a fielder's choice. Senton drove him in a couple of pitches later with a double to right center.

The Pirates added a run in the eight before Christian Dearman and Jose Varela tag-teamed the ninth for a scoreless inning. Varela was awarded his second save of year for his two-thirds innings of work.
