HUNTINGTON, West Virginia (March 16, 2019) – Tensions ran high on the banks of the Ohio River Saturday afternoon as the FIU baseball team dropped it's contest with Marshall 16-5.
With the loss, the Panthers go to 10-8 (1-1 C-USA) on the season. Marshall improves to 11-6 (1-1 C-USA).
Ryan Falls was awarded the win for the Thundering Herd.
Nick MacDonald was handed the loss and fell to 0-2 on the 2019 campaign.
The Panther duo of
Javier Valdes and
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr. paced the FIU bats on the afternoon. The pair each had two hits and an RBI.
Austin Shenton also drove in a run on the day.
FIU opened the scoring in the top of the first with a Valdes' RBI double off the left field wall to bring in Shenton, who reached on a one-out walk. Marshall scored once in the bottom half of the first to tie the game, before plating three runs to take a 4-1 lead after two innings.
The Panthers cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the third with a Hampton triple that scored
Adan Fernandez, before a
Seth Cannady bases loaded walk brought home Hampton.
Marshall scored the next eight runs before a Shenton doubled down the right field line brought home
Jarrett Ford in the visiting part of the sixth. The Thundering Herd pushed across two more runs in the highly emotional bottom of the sixth. The final runs of the day for FIU were scored in the seventh after Hampton reached home on a double play ball.
The Thundering Herd scored two more runs in the eighth, before capping the final score at 16-5 after nine innings.

With the weekend series tied at a game apiece, FIU and Marshall will take to the field one more time on Sunday. First Pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. ET.
