MIAMI (March 27, 2019) – The FIU baseball team fell to the visiting Florida Gulf Coast Eagles on Wednesday night by a score of 11-6.
The Panthers' record goes to 11-14 (2-4 C-USA), while FGCU moves to 16-8 (1-2 ASUN) on the year.
Trey Vickery of FGCU picked up the win after tossing five scoreless innings. FIU's
Everett Hurst was dealt the loss to even his season record at 1-1.
Austin Shenton paced the Panthers offensively with a 2-for-5 day, with the junior driving in three runs on the evening.
Javier Valdes joined his fellow infielder Shenton with two hits of his own to round out the multi-hit Panthers. The series of firsts continued for FIU with
Kaeber Rog getting his first career start of his young Panther career at shortstop.
FGCU scored the first eight runs of the game before
Jarrett Ford scampered home on a wild pitch in the sixth.
Adan Fernandez scored two batters later when Shenton singled to left.
Daniel Brown scored on a fielder's choice in the seventh to cut the FGCU lead to 8-3.
The Panthers and Eagles swapped pair of runs each in the eighth, as a Shenton single brought home Cartaya before a
Nathan Housen double brought home Shenton. Each team scored one run in the ninth frame to bring the final tally to 11-6 in favor of visiting FGCU.
