BOCA RATON, Florida (March 30, 2019) – The FIU baseball team fell in a heartbreaking 1-0 decision against FAU on Saturday afternoon in Boca Raton.
The Panthers' record drops to 11-16 (2-6 C-USA), while FAU moves to 18-9 (7-1 CUSA) on the season.
Saturday's game featured two dueling masters on the mound, with only one run crossing the plate on the day. The win was given to FAU's Mike Ruff, who pitched 7.2 innings of shutout ball.
Nick MacDonald suffered the loss, unfortunately. The FIU junior went seven strong innings of six hit, four strikeout, one run ball.
Derek Cartaya led all Panther batters with two hits at the plate.
Nathan Housen and
Kobe Lopez also added hits for the FIU cause.
Luis Chavez led off the visiting part of the ninth to threaten the FAU lead, as his single to left was his first-career hit.
The only run of the game came in the sixth when an Owl reached on an Panther error. That runner came around to score on a wild pitch after a single and a fielder's choice pushed him to third.
FIU threatened in the eighth when the Panthers loaded the bases, but could not scratch across a run.
