MIAMI (March 9, 2019) – On a night that saw the FIU baseball team score 10 runs on just four hits, the Panthers took the weekend series against Seton Hall by a score of 10-7.
The win improves FIU to 8-6 and matches its season-high win streak at three games. With Saturday night's loss, Seton Hall sinks to 1-8.
Reliever
Greyson Fletcher earned the win after going one and one-third innings of one-run ball after the Panthers' starter
Nick MacDonald struck out six while giving up three earned runs over four and a third. Seton Hall's Nick Payero was handed the loss after giving up five runs on two hits in an inning of work.
The Panther power duo of
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr. and
Jose Garcia provided the knockout blows with a pair of two-run home runs. Hampton launched his second homer of the season in the second and Garcia hit his first no-doubter of 2019 in the third inning. Saturday night marks the first time since the Bethune-Cookman game on Feb. 24, 2018 that Hampton and Garcia have homered in the same game.
Seton Hall opened the scoring the first, but Hampton's moonshot opened the flood gates for the Panther offense in the second.
Javier Valdes was walked following Hampton's homer then advanced to second on a Garcia hit by pitch. Both runners advanced on a Seton Hall wild pitch. Valdes scored on a
John Rodriguez single to left. Garcia later scored on a wild pitch and Rodriguez scored on a crazy 4-6-3 putout at first with one out and the infield in.
Garcia's home run made it 7-2 before the Pirates scored one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-6.
FIU manufactured three insurance runs via a single, two walks and two hit batsmen in the seventh to make it 10-6.
The Pirates added a run in the eight before
Gio Soto struck out two in the ninth for his first save of the 2019 campaign.
