Shenton Extends Hit Streak in Loss to Miami

Panthers return home on Friday against Charlotte

CORAL GABLES, Florida (April 24, 2019) – Despite scoring ten runs on the night, the FIU baseball team fell to Miami on Wednesday 18-10 as the Panthers and Hurricanes conclude their season series.

FIU returns to the diamond on Friday, with the Panthers hosting Charlotte for a three-game set at home. First pitch on Friday is for 7 p.m. ET, with the game set to stream on CUSA.tv. Tickets to all FIU home games can be purchased online at tickets.fiusports.com or by phone at 305-FIU-GAME.

With the loss, FIU falls to 17-23 on the year. UM moves its record to 28-14 following the victory.

Austin Shenton shined for the Panthers at the plate, as the junior continued his 13-game hit streak after going 2-for-3 on the night with a pair of RBIs. Shenton has been blistering in the month of April as well, earning 20 RBIs since the first of the month.

Everett Hurst was dealt the loss, after giving up three runs in 1.1 innings of work. UM's Mark Mixon earned the win on the mound, pitching 2.0 innings and allowing two earned runs.

Jose Garcia got the scoring started in the first inning on Wednesday night, after the sophomore crushed his team-leading ninth homer of the season on a two-run shot to left. UM got on the board in the bottom half of the second after a two-run homer of its own to even the score to 2-2.

A seven-run inning in the fourth shifted momentum to the Hurricanes officially, before the Panthers plated two runs in the next half inning to trim the deficit to 9-5.

UM scored the next three runs over the course of the game to stretch its lead to 14-5, as the Panthers responded once again with four runs in the eighth inning to make it 14-9 thanks to a pair of RBI singles by Derek Cartaya and Danny Perez. The RBI by Perez was the first of his young Panther career.

UM matched FIU's four-run eighth with its own, as the Hurricanes jumped ahead 18-9 before the Panthers plated one more in the ninth to bring the final margin to 18-10.
