ORLANDO, Florida (April 24, 2019) – A three-run eighth inning lifted the FIU softball team past UCF on Wednesday afternoon, as the Panthers downed the Knights 4-1 on the road.
With the victory, FIU improves to 23-22 overall, while UCF falls to 28-18 on the year.
FIU's
Allison Muraskin picked up the win in the midweek contest, after allowing one run off seven hits. The sophomore fanned six batters in her fifth complete game of the season for the Panthers.
At the plate, freshman
Alexis Johns led the Panthers as she picked up three hits, while batting in one run. Fellow freshman
Montana Szara earned the go-ahead run after her eighth-inning triple.
After being scoreless for three innings,
Jessica Rivera opened the scoring with a single to center that brought Johns home in the top of the fourth to give FIU the early lead. UCF bounced back to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Szara's triple to right field scored
Alyssa Laboy, while a two-RBI single from Johns brought Szara and
Jackie Schoff around to score and make it 4-1. UCF's short-lived rally was put down by Muraskin after she got the final three batters after a lead-off single.
