MIAMI (April 28, 2019) – Bathed in the South Florida sun, the FIU baseball team took the weekend finale 2-1 from Charlotte on Sunday.  

FIU improves to 18-25 and 8-13 in Conference USA play with the win. Charlotte falls to 16-26-1 and 7-13-1 on the year.
 
Franco Aleman pitched his first-career complete game for the win on Sunday. The lanky righty surrendered eight hits scattered over his nine innings of work, while striking out five 49ers on the day. Carson Pinkney was handed the loss for Charlotte.
 
Both Panther runs on the afternoon came off the bat of Jose Garcia in the fourth frame. Garcia powered a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall for his team-leading 11th homer of the season and second of the weekend. Austin Shenton scored on the Garcia bomb after extending his hit-streak to 16 games prior to the at bat.
 
Derek Cartaya notched two more hits to push his own hit-streak to 13-games. Javier Valdes added two base knocks for his 10th multi-hit game of season.
 
Charlotte threatened in the ninth with back-to-back doubles to cut the FIU lead to 2-1, before a liner hit right at Shenton resulted in a game-ending double play.  

UP NEXT
The longest homestand of the season continues on Wednesday as Bethune-Cookman comes to town at 7:00 p.m., before the home swing closes with UAB for a three-game weekend set begining on Friday, May 3.
