Panthers Drop Final Midweek at Stetson

FIU returns to action Thursday at 7 p.m.

DELAND, Florida (May 14 2019) – The FIU baseball team fell on Tuesday in a 6-4 decision at the hands of Stetson in the final midweek of the 2019 season.

FIU heads into the final weekend of the season with a 22-30 overall record and a 11-16 mark in Conference USA. Stetson improves to 22-29.

On a night that saw eight different Panther pitchers each toss one inning of work, Steven Casey was tagged with the loss after allowing two earned runs on two hits in the opening frame. Michael Bacica of Stetson was handed the win.

Jose Garcia paced FIU at plate with a three-for-four night and two RBIs. Jarett Ford added two more hits and two RBIs. Chris Williams rounded out the multi-hit Panthers with his second such game of the season.

Stetson jumped out to a 4-0 lead after scoring a pair in the first and in the second. Kaeber Rog started the visiting part of the third with a single through the right side to start the Panther rally. Rog came around to score on back-to-back singles by Derek Cartaya and Jarrett Ford. That pair later scored on a Garcia RBI single to center to cut the Stetson lead to 4-3.

The Hatters answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the third pushing the Stetson lead to 5-3 before the two bullpens settled in for the night. FIU tried to mount another rally in the sixth when a Ford double to center scored Chris Williams to get the Panthers back within one at 5-4. The inning ended with Stetson's center fielder taking away a sure base hit from Austin Shenton, who's 22 game hit streak came to an end on the night.

The Hatters added an insurance run in the seventh before Vlad Nunez preserved a 6-4 victory for a save.
