Men’s Basketball Stumbles at Rice

The Panthers fell to Rice on Saturday afternoon.

HOUSTON (Jan. 11, 2020) – The FIU men's basketball team continued Conference USA play with a game at Tudor Fieldhouse against Rice on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers fell to the Owls 92-78 for the team's second-straight loss.

With the loss, FIU moved to 11-6 overall and 2-2 in league play. Rice goes to 9-8 for the season and 1-3 against league opponents.

In the first half, FIU struggled when the team went 10-30 from the field and just 3-16 from behind the arc. The Panthers allowed the opposition to shoot 44.7% to open the game, and FIU trailed 42-30 at the half. Devon Andrews posted a squad-best 10 points and seven rebounds to open the contest.

Out of the break, FIU showed improvements, shooting 59.4% from the field. The team continued to battle, but the Rice remained hot from beyond the three-point line, going 10-17 in the half. The Panthers were unable to overcome the first-half deficit and fell to the Owls 92-78.

Four FIU players scored in double figures despite the loss. Trejon Jacob and Andrews scored 19 points each, while Osasumwen Osaghae tallied 18 points and eight rebounds and Antonio Daye, Jr. added 10 points. 

UP NEXT
The Panthers welcome UAB to the Ocean Bank Convocation Center for a conference contest on Thursday, Jan. 16. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

ALUMNI GAME
The FIU men's basketball program welcomes back its alumni to the Ocean Bank Convocation Center on Saturday, Jan. 18, for the Panthers' game against Middle Tennessee. Tipoff from the Conference USA clash is set for 7 p.m. ET. The 2019-2020 campaign marks the 25th anniversary of the banner season, which resulted in the program's first NCAA appearance.
