FIU Takes Down UTSA in Overtime

Eric Lovett nailed a buzzer-beater to send the game to overtime.

MIAMI (Jan. 4, 2020) – The FIU men's basketball team battled Conference USA foe UTSA at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center on Saturday night. The Panthers topped the Roadrunners 90-83 in overtime to remain undefeated at home this season.

With the win, FIU moved to 11-4 for the year and 2-0 in league play. UTSA goes to 6-9 with the loss and 0-2 against C-USA opponents.

The Panthers started the contest shooting 46.7% from the field but allowed the Roadrunners to shoot 51.5% in the half, and the team trailed UTSA 42-39 when the squads went to the locker room. Individually, Devon Andrews led FIU with 13 points and six rebounds before the break

Coming out of the locker room, FIU continued to battle, going 12-27 from the field and 4-10 from three. With time winding down and the team down a pair, Eric Lovett came up with a steal and nailed a jumper as time expired, extending the game another five minutes with the score tied 77-77.

During the overtime period, FIU kept its momentum going shooting 40% from beyond the arc and outscoring the opposition 13-6 to take home the 90-83 victory.

Andrews closed out the contest with a team-best 26 points and was a rebound shy of a double-double. Osasumwen Osaghae recorded a squad-best three blocks while Antonio Daye, Jr. tallied nine assists during the win.

UP NEXT
FIU heads to the Lone Star State to face North Texas. The Panthers face the Mean Green on Thursday, Jan. 9, at 8 p.m. ET.

ALUMNI GAME
The FIU men's basketball program welcomes back its alumni to the Ocean Bank Convocation Center on Saturday, Jan 18, for the Panthers' game against Middle Tennessee. Tipoff from the Conference USA clash is set for 7 p.m. ET. The 2019-2020 campaign marks the 25th anniversary of the banner season, which resulted in the program's first NCAA appearance.
